Seattle:

A unanimous Seattle City Council vote to ban police from using chokeholds, tear gas, pepper spray, and several other crowd control devices

The city will redirect at least $100 million to further invest in community-based programs focused on black youth and adults, including employment programs, businesses, and programs that provide alternatives to arrest and incarcerate. 

 

Portland:

$12 million will be redirected toward communities of color — $7 million would come out of the Portland Police Bureau and $5 million from “other city funds.” 

The mayor said he would also be changing policies regarding consent searches for traffic stops, working to strengthen community-led police oversight bodies, and banning chokeholds.

 

Colorado:

Colorado’s sweeping police accountability bill, passed in the wake of George Floyd’s death, into law

Under the new law, officers are also prohibited from using deadly physical force to apprehend a person who is suspected only of a minor or nonviolent offense.

 

Law enforcement officers must intervene if a fellow officer is using inappropriate force against a member of the public.

Body cameras

  • Seattle’s mayor said on June 8 she would order officers to turn on body cameras during protests.
  • Denver’s police announced on June 7 that officers and SWAT units would turn on body cameras during “tactical operations,”
  • officers need to report “if they intentionally point any firearm at a person.”
  • Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order requires that troopers wear body cameras.
  • Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner directed officers on June 10 to wear body cameras while serving no-knock warrants.
Finding new ways to police
  • The Georgia House voted to let voters decide to eliminate county police departments

Louisville, Kentucky to ban “no-knock” search warrants in the city.   would have saved the life of Brianna Taylor if this was in effect
